Mediation: Not a Money Saver

I’m attorney Jonna Spilbor with your 60-second legal lowdown. When comparing mediation to separation or divorce, mediation is not the money-saver it’s cracked up to be. Here’s why.

One, let’s be real, when you’re in Splitsville, disagreement is inevitable. In mediation, you’re forced to sign a contract promising that even though you hate each other you’re going to act like you love each other. Yes, take that and the unicorn you rode in on.

Two, in divorce, when you disagree there’s always a judge ready to solve the problem for you. Disagree in mediation and you get kicked out of the process faster than a playground jerk who throws balls at the smaller kids. All the money you “saved” by choosing mediation, gone. And,

Three, mediation is non-binding. Meaning, if you and your ex finally agree to everything at three PM on a Tuesday, at 3:05 you can use that agreement to diaper your baby’s butt.
