Planning for Your Divorce

I’m Attorney Jonna Spilbor with the holiday edition of your 60 Second Legal Lowdown. The phrase “I want a divorce” doesn’t exactly flow after please pass the figgy pudding. But if your new year’s resolution includes changing your Facebook status to single, here are a few things to think about.

One, get a grip on your financial affairs. Copy your bank records and bills and make sure you know where every penny is, including the cash under the mattress that could magically disappear, if you get my drift.

Two, if you plan to live with your spouse for economic reasons while your divorce is pending, learn the fine art of annoyance management. Turning the dirty socks on the floor into kindling will only make life more uncomfortable. It’s not forever, let it go.

Three, taking time off from work to go to court will make you a real favorite at the office. Not! Talk to your boss in advance about making up the time. You don’t want to win the battle but lose your job.
